About the LHMU

The LHMU is a growing, dynamic union, organising workers to have a strong voice at work and in society.

Our members work in such diverse industries as hospitality, childcare, cleaning, security, manufacturing and health and aged care.

We run creative and forceful campaigns to win respect and justice for our members.

These campaigns include Clean Start - Fair Deal for Cleaners, Better Jobs, Better Hotels, Big Steps in Childcare and Response Time! Our Ambos. Our Lives.

Why we do it

Manufacturing

I did honours in botany and genetics at uni and worked for a biotechnology company for a short time.

But I saw John Howard's continued attacks on workers and I decided I couldn't sit back and watch it happen.

I wanted a job that would put me on the frontline in defending workers' rights and fighting for a fairer society.

Working as an LHMU organiser has been really rewarding. You can see the difference you make to people's lives.

In my time with the LHMU, I've helped win the first ever state-wide union agreement for security guards, protecting the wages and conditions of thousands of low-paid workers from Howard's unfair laws.

My highlight so far has to be helping bring down the Howard Government and their draconian agenda.

Cleaning

Daria, Lead Organiser

Before coming to the LHMU I worked in the community sector for several years.

I saw the system fail countless people who have no power in our society.

I was sick of throwing things at the television every time I saw politicians crapping on.

I wanted a job that allowed me to work with people to build their power and make real change.

Working at the LHMU on the Clean Start - Fair Deal for Cleaners campaign has been the most inspiring and amazing job I've ever had.

I have spent the last three years working with cleaners to fight for change in their industry.

Through this campaign cleaners have stood up to poverty wages and unfair working conditions. They are now on the road to winning a fair deal.
